Hours & Seasons
Maudslay State Park is open sunrise to sunset every day of the year. DCR's own brochure puts it plainly: sunrise to sunset daily, open year-round. There is no summer-only season here; the trails, meadows and gardens stay open through winter, and the parking fee is charged in every month (see parking). The one seasonal change on DCR's map is the Laurels area along the river, which is closed to the public from November 1 to March 31.
Hours at a Glance
Daily Hours
Sunrise to sunset means the day is long in June and short in December. DCR's hiking guidance says the average pace is about 1.5 miles an hour, that most suggested distances are round trips, and that you should watch the weather and the time of sunset. On a winter afternoon, start a long loop early enough to be back at the lot before dark.
The Laurels Winter Closure
DCR's trail map shades one area of the park as closed to the public from November 1 to March 31. It is the Laurels, the riverbank stand of mountain laurel between Laurel Walk, Cathedral Road and the Castle Hill Trail, on the north side of the park. The Merrimack River Trail runs along this section, so plan winter walks on the trails that stay open, and follow any posted signs at the trail junctions.
Areas Open Only During Events
The map also marks a Historic Curatorship Lease Area, where access is only during scheduled events and programs. The Maudslay Arts Center, a private venue in the park, keeps its own schedule; check with it directly for concert or event times (see weddings and events).
Best Times by Season
- Spring: DCR's bloom cycle starts with dogwoods in the first week of May and builds through azaleas and rhododendrons in the third and fourth weeks.
- June: mountain laurel peaks around the third week of June, with swamp azalea in the second week and rosebay rhododendron in the fourth.
- Summer: the formal gardens bloom from May through August, and DCR runs educational programs in summer.
- Fall: DCR says the landscape is ablaze with colorful foliage, and the open meadows give long scenic views.
- Winter: the park stays open; DCR lists cross-country skiing among its activities.
